Apostille For Legal Documents
For individuals who are working or living overseas, authenticated copies of certain legal documents (such as birth certificates, driver’s licenses, college transcripts or marriage certificates) may be needed. These documents must be accompanied by a notarized letter from the office or government entity that issued them. Apostilles are available from the New York State Department of State for public documents that have been prepared or notarized in New York. The NDNY does not issue apostilles on non-public documents, such as those filed on the docket in civil, criminal or miscellaneous cases.
The apostille certification California process is designed to streamline the traditional legalization of foreign public documents. Traditionally, this involved a chain of official authentications, which was time-consuming and expensive. The 1961 Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents created a process called “apostille” that reduces this chain to one authentication by a competent authority in the country where the document was issued.
Apostille for Financial Records and Banking Documents
Apostilles can be issued for public documents that are notarized in a county clerk’s or secretary of state’s office, and signed by a notary. Private documents, such as power of attorney and articles of incorporation, must be authenticated by a designated authority in the state where they were issued. The apostille certificate includes the seal and authorized signature of that authority. Documents issued by federal agencies must be authenticated through a different process, the U.S. Department of State Authentication Office.
